Overview of The Risks And Managing Them

This post outlines how resilience fits into my wider life, the hazards/risks I manage and how I address them. This post is an overview, with more detail to follow later.

Resilience As Part Of Wider Life

A resilient home supports a wider and fuller life, by protecting against specific shocks in life. The way I imagine this is as:

My Risk Management Process

My goal is to be ready for when the risk happens. As part of this, I

  • Understand the impact of the risk happening e.g. what does it mean if the power is cut
  • Decide what I will do in those circumstances
  • Prepare supplies and skills
  • Rehearse the response, and refine it until it is 'good enough' for me.
Key Terms
  • Risk: A 'risk' is a threat/danger.
  • Response: A 'response' is how I will handle the Risk.
  • The Risks Being Managed

Here are the risks I want to be ready for and the responses concerned. This is not intended to be a inventory of all potential life risks, just the ones I consider realistic for my circumstances.

    Striking A Healthy Balance

It's easy to overly focus on '#prepping life', as it is both project-focused, fun and easy to be motivated by insecurity/anxiety ('Am I safe enough?').

It’s important to strike a healthy balance between ‘living’ and ‘getting resilient’, working on both at the same time, somewhere along a spectrum. If my time is at either end of the spectrum, then I'm probably doing too much or too little.  Balancing time, money and effort across these competing priorities is an ongoing dialogue with myself and my priorities.
